Balancing Family Life When You Work from Home

Life with Your Family When You Work from Home

In an earlier blog, Jordan Essentials went over some simple steps to remember if you’re looking to work from home. But there’s one part of combining your living and working spaces that need to be explored in a little more depth, with a little more nuance – how it affects your family.

If you work from home or are planning to start, and you share your home with a family, it’s really important that you think hard about balancing your home and work lives, even more so than when you travel to an office or another workplace every day.

Jordan Essentials offers some advice on maintaining a strong relationship with your family when you work from home.

Communication is Key

Working from home can make sometimes make communication difficult with clients, customers, coworkers, employers – whoever might be involved in the process. But communication matters with the people you live with, too.

Before you start your new at-home role, whether you’re working remotely for someone, or have struck out on your own as part of the Jordan Essentials team, talk to your family about the setup of your in-home office. Come up with routines and rules together, so everyone understands, and every has some input and an understanding of how you’re going to be working.

This is especially important if you have young kids, since it’s harder for smaller children to have a grasp of boundaries.

Make It a Game

Speaking of younger kids, how do you make sure that yours know when it’s okay and when it’s not okay to engage with you? It’s easy enough to set up clearly defined times, but it’s just as easy for a small child to forget you’re working, or simply not understand.

One of the best ways you can help to make it clear is to turn it into a game. Making signs, or even red and green stop lights for when it’s okay to enter your office, is a great, fun way to make it easier for them to understand. Involving them in the process of making these colorful signs also makes it more playful.

Set Defined Workday Hours

For the benefit of both you and your family, you need to make sure you set up defined times for when the work day begins and ends when you work from home – and stick to them! This isn’t just beneficial for your own wellbeing, but it’s great for your family to know exactly when they can expect you to be finished.

Make Family Time a Priority Outside of Work

Once your workday is over, you need to make your family your priority. If you have young kids, then you need to make a special point to make your evenings and weekends about them, since it can be hard for them to understand why you’re at home, but inaccessible for most of the day.

Even if you have teenagers, or it’s just you and your partner, it’s no less important to make downtime about them. Get involved in their hobbies, take your partner on dates, and socialize for your benefit and theirs!
